Moravian Museum

About

Moravian Museum in Brno is the second‑largest and one of the oldest museums in the Czech Republic, founded in 1817. It is best known for its extraordinary archaeological and anthropological collections, including the world‑famous Venus of Dolní Věstonice, a Paleolithic ceramic figurine over 25,000 years old. This remarkable piece makes the museum a key destination for anyone interested in early human history. Inside, visitors can explore a wide range of exhibitions. The Anthropos Pavilion presents human evolution with life‑size reconstructions, prehistoric tools and interactive displays that trace the development of early societies. The Dietrichstein Palace, another major branch, houses natural history, ethnography and historical collections, including rare minerals, traditional Moravian costumes and exhibits on regional folklore. The museum also preserves unique manuscripts, musical instruments and scientific collections that highlight Moravia’s cultural identity.

Location

The Moravian Museum is located in the historic center of Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, on Zelný trh (Cabbage Market) at Zelný trh 6. It is housed in the magnificent Dietrichstein Palace, a grand baroque building originally constructed as the residence of Cardinal Franz von Dietrichstein between 1613 and 1616. As the biggest and oldest museum in Moravia, and the second-largest and second-oldest museum in the entire Czech Republic, the Moravian Museum was established in July 1817 by Emperor Francis I. Nearby attractions include the Brno Historic Old Town Square, the vibrant heart of the city lined with colorful baroque and renaissance buildings, cafes, restaurants, and shops. The Holy Trinity Column and Parnas Fountain are focal points of the square, where weekly markets bring local vendors selling fresh produce and crafts. Špilberk Castle perched on a hilltop overlooking the city is a short walk away, offering panoramic views and housing the Brno City Museum. The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, with its distinctive neo-Gothic twin spires dominating Brno's skyline, is also nearby. Visitors can explore the mysterious Brno Underground Labyrinth beneath the city center, or visit the nearby Mendel Museum in the Augustinian Abbey and the Anthropos Pavilion. The Church of St. James and the unique Tugendhat Villa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are also within easy reach of the Moravian Museum.
