Špilberk Castle

About

Špilberk Castle is Brno’s defining landmark, a fortress whose history mirrors the city’s own dramatic past. Founded in the 13th century by the Přemyslid kings, it later became one of the Habsburg Empire’s most feared prisons—earning the grim nickname “the jail of nations.” An intriguing fact is that Italian revolutionaries, including members of the Carbonari movement, were once held in its casemates, turning Špilberk into a symbol of political oppression across Europe. Inside, the castle hosts several permanent exhibitions. The Casemates are the most atmospheric: long, vaulted corridors once used as dungeons, preserved to show the harsh conditions prisoners endured. The Baroque Pharmacy offers a rare look at historical medical tools and remedies, while the Brno City Museum galleries present medieval artefacts, Gothic sculpture, and the story of the fortress’s military evolution. Visitors can also explore the lookout towers and ramparts, which provide some of the best views of Brno’s skyline. The castle courtyards and bastions host seasonal events, adding a lively contrast to the fortress’s heavy history.

Špilberk Castle
Location

Špilberk Castle is a massive hilltop fortress overlooking Brno’s Old Town, situated on Špilberk hill in the city centre, just above the historic core. Its construction began in the mid‑13th century under King Přemysl Otakar II as a royal castle and later evolved into one of Europe’s most feared Habsburg prisons, known as the “jail of nations”. Today it houses the Brno City Museum with permanent exhibitions on the castle’s history and the prison, plus casemates, a lookout tower, and a 119‑metre deep well in the large courtyard. The castle is about a 15‑minute walk from Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody), Brno’s main square, and is easily reached on foot via several paths from the Old Town, including a short route from Husova Street near the 10‑Z nuclear bunker. Nearby attractions include the Baroque Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on Petrov hill, the Old Town Hall with its 63‑metre tower, and the Brno Ossuary beneath the Church of St. James, one of the largest ossuaries in Europe. The Labyrinth under the Cabbage Market (Zelný trh), an almost one‑kilometre network of historic cellars, is also within easy walking distance. From the castle ramparts you get sweeping views over Brno’s rooftops and the surrounding Moravian landscape, making it a natural stop for both history and views.
