Veveří Castle rises above the Svratka River like a fragment of legend, one of Moravia’s oldest and most storied fortresses. Its origins reach back to the 11th century, making it older than Špilberk. A fascinating fact links the castle to Winston Churchill, who visited the area in 1906 and later recalled rowing beneath its walls during a holiday in Brno. Inside, the castle offers a mix of restored halls and atmospheric medieval spaces. The Royal Hall stands out with its vaulted ceiling and exhibitions on the castle’s noble owners, while the Chapel of St. Procopius preserves Gothic details that survived centuries of conflict. Visitors can explore archaeological finds, hunting artefacts, and models showing how the fortress evolved from a defensive stronghold into a Renaissance residence. The courtyards, with their rugged stonework, create a vivid sense of the castle’s military past. From the ramparts, views stretch across the Brno Reservoir, tying the site to the surrounding landscape.
Brno Czech Republic
Veveří Castle is a vast medieval fortress perched on a rocky promontory above the Brno Dam (Brněnská přehrada) in the Bystrc district, about 12 kilometres northwest of Brno’s city centre. It is one of the largest and oldest castles in Moravia and one of the most extensive castle complexes in the Czech Republic, with origins traditionally dated back to 1059. You can reach Veveří Castle by car in about 20 minutes, or by public transport using tram line 3 to Rakovecká followed by bus 303 to the Hrad Veveří stop, or by a scenic boat trip from Brno along the Svratka River to the dam. The castle grounds are open year‑round, and guided tours reveal its rich history, from early royal residence to later fortifications and its role in regional history. Nearby, the Brno Dam itself is a major attraction for walking, cycling, fishing, and boating, with well‑maintained paths along its scenic banks through lush forests. The area around Veveří Castle is part of a larger natural oasis in Bystrc, offering trails, viewpoints, and quiet spots such as the tourist shelter with a viewpoint and the sheltered fire pit area in the forest. You can also explore the nearby Brno Zoo, located in the same district, and then continue to the city centre to visit Špilberk Castle, the Brno Ossuary, and Freedom Square, making Veveří an ideal start or end to a day combining nature and history.
