The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Brno is one of the city’s most serene and historically layered sacred spaces. Standing within the former Cistercian abbey in Old Brno, it is closely tied to the life of Saint John of Nepomuk, who studied here as a young cleric. A compelling fact is that the basilica preserves the oldest functioning organ in Brno, dating back to the early 18th century and still used for concerts. Inside, the church reveals a harmonious blend of Gothic foundations and Baroque splendour. The high altar, richly decorated with gilded carvings and dynamic sculptures, draws the eye upward toward the vaulted ceiling. Side chapels display expressive Baroque paintings and devotional statues that reflect the spiritual culture of Moravia’s monastic communities. One of the most striking features is the cloister, where fragments of medieval architecture survive alongside later additions. Visitors can also see the abbey’s historic library spaces and explore exhibitions that trace the life of the Cistercian order in Brno.

The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady is a high Gothic church in the Old Brno (Staré Brno) district, located at Mendlovo náměstí 1, directly on Mendel Square. It is part of the Augustinian Abbey complex and is often described as one of the most valuable and stylistically coherent Gothic monuments in the Czech lands. The church was founded by Queen Elizabeth Richeza and built between 1323 and 1334 on the site of an earlier sanctuary dating back to the late 10th century. The basilica is easily reached by public transport: the closest stop is Mendlovo náměstí, served by trams 1, 2, 5, 6, 9 and bus 67, just a two‑minute walk away. It lies at the edge of the city centre, near the Brno Exhibition Centre, and is a short walk from Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody) and the historic Cabbage Market (Zelný trh). Nearby, you can visit the Mendel Museum, dedicated to Gregor Mendel, the Augustinian monk who discovered the laws of inheritance while living in this very abbey. Across the square is the Abbey of St Thomas, strongly connected to Leoš Janáček, and a short walk away is the Brno Exhibition Centre, the VIDA! Science Centre, and the Anthropos Pavilion. From Mendel Square, you can also walk up to Špilberk Castle, explore the historic Old Town, or continue to the Diocesan Museum and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on Petrov Hill, making the basilica a convenient stop on a cultural tour of Brno.
