Diocesan Museum

About

The Diocesan Museum in Brno offers a quiet but powerful journey through the spiritual and artistic history of Moravia. Housed beside the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, it occupies one of the oldest surviving chapters of the Brno bishopric. A compelling fact is that the museum preserves fragments of the original Romanesque basilica that once stood on the hill, making it a rare window into Brno’s medieval past. Inside, the highlight is the Treasury, a collection of liturgical goldsmithing that includes chalices, reliquaries, and embroidered vestments crafted for bishops and noble patrons. Many pieces survived wars and political upheavals because they were hidden in cathedral vaults. The museum also displays Gothic and Baroque sculptures, altarpieces, and devotional paintings that reveal how religious art shaped local identity. A particularly striking object is the 14th‑century Madonna of Brno, admired for its gentle expression and refined carving. Visitors can also explore archaeological finds from the cathedral hill, showing how the site evolved from a fortified settlement into a spiritual centre.

Location

The Diocesan Museum (Diecézní muzeum) is located in the heart of Brno on Petrov Street, right next to the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on the historic hill of Petrov. It occupies the newly reconstructed Canon’s House at Petrov 1 and is the first diocesan museum in the Czech Republic, focusing on religious art, sacred objects, and the cultural history of the Brno diocese. Because it sits directly beside the cathedral, visitors can easily combine both sites in one stop. The cathedral itself, with its striking towers and panoramic views from the hill, is one of Brno’s most iconic landmarks. Just a short walk down the hill brings you to Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody), the city’s main square, and the nearby Zelný trh (Green Market), a historic market square full of cafés and shops. From the museum, you can also reach the Old Town Hall with its medieval tower and the Brno Ossuary, one of Europe’s largest ossuaries, within a few minutes’ walk. The Church of Saint James, with its 94‑metre tower and its own ossuary, is also nearby. This makes the Diocesan Museum an ideal starting point for a compact walking tour of Brno’s most important historic and religious sites.
