Graz Museum Schlossberg offers a vivid, immersive exploration of Graz’s most iconic hill, blending archaeology, military history, and panoramic storytelling. Located inside the former casemates of the fortress, the museum reveals how the Schlossberg shaped the city’s identity—from a medieval stronghold to a symbol of resilience after Napoleon ordered most of the fortifications destroyed in 1809. Inside, visitors encounter atmospheric stone chambers where multimedia installations recreate life within the fortress. Models and artefacts illustrate the ingenious defensive systems that once made the Schlossberg nearly impregnable. A highlight is the section dedicated to the famous Türkenbelagerung period, showing how Graz withstood Ottoman threats through strategic engineering and local determination. The museum also traces the transformation of the hill into a public park in the 19th century, featuring early tourism posters, photographs, and plans for the clock tower and bell tower—now beloved city landmarks. Interactive displays allow visitors to explore how the Schlossberg tunnels were expanded during the Second World War, adding another layer to its complex history.
Graz Austria
The Graz Museum Schlossberg is located at Schloßberg 5, 8010 Graz, Austria, on the historic Schlossberg (Castle Hill) in Graz’s inner city, perched majestically atop the hill that was the site of the original fortress where Graz was founded. Because the museum sits on Schlossberg, you can easily reach many of Graz’s top sights on foot or by using the Schlossbergbahn funicular or the lift. The most famous attraction nearby is the Uhrturm (Clock Tower), Graz’s iconic timepiece and the city’s most visible symbol, which rises at 473 meters above the city. The Schlossberg itself features wooded slopes, bucolic paths, the Chinese Pavilion, Turkish Well, Stable Bastion (Stallbastei), ruins of St. Thomas Chapel, a beer hall, and a Michelin-star wine shop. From the museum, you can walk to the Burg (Castellum) and the Double Spiral Staircase (Doppelte Wendelstufe), located on the opposite side of the hill, and visit Graz Cathedral (Grazerdom) and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II nearby. The Styrian Armoury (Landeszeughaus), home to the world’s largest collection of historic weapons, is close to the Glockenspiel, and the Murinsel (Island in the Mur), a unique floating platform with a café and amphitheater, is also within walking distance.
