Museum für Geschichte Graz presents the story of Styria through objects that reveal how people lived, worked, and imagined their world across the centuries. Housed in the historic Palais Herberstein, the museum combines elegant Baroque architecture with modern exhibition design, creating a setting where everyday artefacts gain unexpected depth. Inside, visitors encounter themes rather than timelines. One gallery explores how borders, identities, and political shifts shaped Styrian life, using maps, portraits, and personal belongings to show how individuals experienced major historical events. Another highlight is the collection of early photography, including rare panoramic images of Graz that document the city before industrial expansion transformed its skyline. The museum also preserves unique treasures such as ceremonial guild objects, intricately carved furniture, and religious artworks that once decorated rural chapels. Multimedia installations bring these pieces to life, connecting them to broader cultural narratives. Temporary exhibitions often focus on social history, memory, and the changing urban landscape, making each visit distinct.

The Museum für Geschichte Graz, also called the History Museum of Graz, is located in the heart of Graz’s historic inner city at Sackstraße 16, 8010 Graz, Austria, in the former city palace of the Counts of Herberstein (Palais Herberstein), very close to Schlossbergplatz and the Murinsel tram stop. Because the museum is in Graz’s central historic area, you can easily combine it with many of the city’s top sights on a short walking tour. Nearby attractions include the Graz Museum (just 34 meters away), the famous Clock Tower (Uhrturm) on Schlossberg (about 0.1 km), and the historic old town (Altstadt von Graz). The Schlossbergrutsche (the Slide Graz) and Schlossberglift are also very close, offering easy access to the hilltop views and the Double Spiral Staircase at the Burg. The Hauptplatz (main square) with its historic buildings, Sporgasse (a charming historic street), Kastner & Öhler Paradeishof, and the Step Church (Stiegenkirche) are all within a short walk from the museum. The Styrian Armoury (Landeszeughaus), the world’s largest historic armoury, is a bit further but still easily reachable, and the Landhaushof (Landhaus Courtyard) is nearby. From the Museum für Geschichte, you can walk or take the tram to the Murinsel (Island in the Mur), a unique floating café and amphitheater, the Kunsthaus Graz (the “blue bubble”), and Eggenberg Palace with its stately halls and magnificent park.
