The Museum der Wahrnehmung (MuWa) in Graz is a rare institution dedicated entirely to the art and science of perception. Housed in a former bathhouse from 1914, its circular architecture already prepares visitors for a space where orientation, expectation, and sensory habits are gently challenged. Since its opening in 1996, the museum has become known for exhibitions that blur the line between seeing and experiencing. Inside, MuWa invites visitors to question how the brain constructs reality. Installations play with light, shadow, colour, and sound, revealing how easily perception can be bent or misled. Optical illusions, kinetic artworks, and interactive pieces encourage slow looking—standing still, shifting position, or listening closely often transforms what appears at first glance. The museum’s signature “perception chambers” offer immersive environments where reflections multiply, shapes dissolve, or silence becomes unexpectedly loud. A highlight is the focus on contemporary artists who explore sensory boundaries, making each visit different as exhibitions rotate. The museum also preserves elements of the old bathhouse, allowing visitors to sense the building’s original function while engaging with modern perceptual art.

Museum der Wahrnehmung (also called MUWA) is a sensory and perception museum located in Graz’s Augarten park at Friedrichgasse 41 in the Jakomini district. It is housed in a historic, octagonal, protected building that was originally the city’s public Volksbad (pool), opened in 1905. The museum focuses on sensory illusions, art, and how the human senses work. Its exhibitions change regularly, offering visitors a unique mix of art and science. Adjacent to the museum is the Samadhi-Bad, a small pool that can be used by appointment. Near the museum, Augarten park itself is ideal for walking and relaxing. Short trips from here lead to many of Graz’s top attractions: the historic Old Town, Schlossberg hill with its famous Clock Tower (Uhrturm), Graz Cathedral, the Murinsel island on the Mur River, and the striking blue Kunsthaus Graz. You can also visit the nearby Styrian Armoury, Eggenberg Palace, the Graz Museum, and the Friedgasse area known for its cultural sites.
