Schauspielhaus Graz is one of Austria’s leading theatres and a cornerstone of the city’s cultural identity. Founded in 1776, it has evolved from a modest stage into a bold, contemporary institution known for innovative productions and strong ensemble work. Its current building, redesigned in the mid‑20th century, blends historic charm with modern functionality, creating an intimate yet dynamic atmosphere for audiences. Inside, the main stage impresses with its technical versatility, allowing directors to experiment with large‑scale sets, immersive environments, and unconventional staging. The Hauptbühne hosts major productions ranging from classical drama to cutting‑edge European theatre, while the smaller Probebühne and Next Liberty spaces support experimental works, youth theatre, and new writing. This multi‑stage structure makes the Schauspielhaus a laboratory for artistic risk‑taking. A hallmark of the theatre is its commitment to contemporary themes—identity, politics, social change—often explored through bold reinterpretations of classics or newly commissioned plays. Visitors can also appreciate the foyer’s clean architectural lines, exhibition displays, and the lively atmosphere before performances.
Graz Austria
The Schauspielhaus Graz is Austria’s second-largest speaking theatre and one of the country’s largest theatres overall, located at Hofgasse 11 in the Innere Stadt (historic city centre) of Graz. Built in 1825, this classic theatre stages proprietary productions from September to June and offers a diverse repertoire that includes numerous music and dance events, readings, and discussions alongside its main theatre program with many premieres and first performances each season. Because the theatre sits in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, it is surrounded by Graz’s most important cultural and historical attractions. Within a few minutes’ walk you can reach Graz Cathedral and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, Grazer Burg (Graz Castle) with its famous late Gothic Double Spiral Staircase, and the Landeszeughaus (Styrian Armoury), one of Europe’s largest historic armour collections. The historic Hauptplatz (Main Square), the Glockenspielplatz square with its animated clock figures, and the Renaissance Landhaus with its courtyard are also close by. From the Schauspielhaus you can easily explore the futuristic Murinsel island on the Mur River, the striking blue Kunsthaus Graz modern art museum, and HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark on the nearby Burgring. The Schlossberg hill with its Uhrturm (Clock Tower) and panoramic views of the city, as well as Schloss Eggenberg Palace.
