Graz Museum offers a thoughtful, contemporary look at the city’s identity, tracing how Graz has evolved from a medieval stronghold into a modern cultural centre. Housed in the historic Palais Khuenburg, the museum blends old architecture with innovative exhibition design. One of its most engaging aspects is its focus on everyday life: objects, photographs, and personal stories that reveal how ordinary people shaped the city across centuries. Inside, visitors encounter thematic galleries rather than a strict chronological path. Highlights include multimedia installations that explore urban change, migration, and the city’s shifting political landscape. The “360° Graz” exhibition is especially popular, presenting the city through layered perspectives—architecture, memory, and social history—using interactive displays that invite visitors to explore at their own pace. The museum also preserves unique artefacts such as early firefighting equipment, guild objects, and rare maps that show how Graz expanded beyond its medieval core. Temporary exhibitions often spotlight contemporary issues, connecting the past with the present in a way that feels fresh and relevant.
Graz Austria
The Graz Museum is located at Sackstraße 18, 8010 Graz, Austria, in the heart of Graz’s historic inner city, very close to the Graz Schlossberg (Castle Hill) and the Schlossbergplatz/Murinsel tram stop. Because the museum is in Graz’s central historic area, you can easily combine it with many of the city’s top sights on a short walking tour. Nearby attractions include the Schlossberg with the famous Clock Tower (Uhrstuhl), the Double Spiral Staircase at the Burg, Graz Cathedral, and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, all fairly close. The Styrian Armoury (Landeszeughaus), home to the world’s largest collection of historic weapons, is also nearby, as is the main square Hauptplatz with its historic buildings. The Murinsel, a unique floating platform designed by artist Vito Acconci on the River Mur, is within walking distance and features a café and amphitheater for events. The Kunsthaus Graz, known as the “blue bubble,” is a contemporary art museum with changing exhibitions throughout the year, and Eggenberg Palace with its stately halls and magnificent park is about 15 km northwest of Graz, reachable by tram. Grazerdom (Graz Cathedral) and the Landhaus Courtyard are also within easy reach, making the Graz Museum a perfect starting point for exploring the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
