Joanneumsviertel is Graz’s most dynamic cultural quarter, a modern architectural ensemble that links several major museums into one fluid urban space. Created through the transformation of historic Joanneum buildings and the addition of striking contemporary structures, it forms a cultural campus where art, science, and history meet. The quarter’s signature feature is its glass‑roofed courtyard, a bright, sheltered plaza that feels both open and intimate, often used for events, installations, and gatherings. Inside the complex, visitors can explore the Neue Galerie Graz, known for its strong focus on modern and contemporary art, including Austrian Expressionism and avant‑garde movements. The Natural History Museum offers a completely different experience, with geological treasures, regional wildlife displays, and interactive exhibits that appeal to all ages. The Multimedia Collections preserve early photography, film, and sound recordings, revealing how Styria documented itself over the past century. A highlight is the subterranean visitor centre, a sleek, minimalist space that connects the museums beneath the courtyard. Its gently curved walls and soft lighting create a futuristic atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the historic façades above.

The Joanneumsviertel, also known as the Joanneum Quarter, is located in the heart of Graz’s historic old town at Joanneumsviertel 1, 8010 Graz, Austria, in the neighborhood of Rauber- and Neutorgasse, just southeast of the main square (Hauptplatz) and close to the Landhaus. Because the quarter is in the historic center, you can easily reach many of Graz’s top attractions on foot. Very close by is the Graz main square (Hauptplatz), the Landhaus (a stunning example of Renaissance architecture), and the Franciscan Church with its delightful Franziskanerplatz square. The Styrian Armory (Landeszeughaus), the world’s largest historic armoury, is a short walk away on Herrengasse, near the Glockenspiel. From the Joanneumsviertel, you can walk to the Schlossberg (Castle Hill) with the famous Clock Tower (Uhrturm), Graz Cathedral (Grazerdom), the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, and the Burg (Castellum) with the Double Spiral Staircase. The Murinsel (Island in the Mur), a unique floating café and amphitheater, and the Kunsthaus Graz (“Friendly Alien”), a modern art museum with a blue blob-shaped facade, are also within easy walking distance or a short tram ride.
