The Museum Reinhard Ernst, opened in June 2024, is Wiesbaden’s newest cultural landmark and one of Europe’s most important museums dedicated entirely to abstract art. Located on Wilhelmstraße in the city center, the striking building was designed by Japanese Pritzker Prize–winning architect Fumihiko Maki, whose clear lines and light-filled spaces create a perfect setting for modern works. The museum houses the private collection of entrepreneur Reinhard Ernst, who has assembled more than 900 paintings and sculptures over decades of travel and passion for art. Around 200 works are on display at any given time, with the focus on German and European post-war abstraction, American Expressionism, and Japanese avant-garde movements. The collection includes masterpieces by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hofmann, and Kazuo Shiraga, many of which are being shown to the public for the first time. With rotating exhibitions, educational programs, and a strong international outlook, the Museum Reinhard Ernst enriches Wiesbaden’s cultural life and offers visitors a vibrant dialogue between art, architecture, and history.
