Bergkirche is a Gothic Revival Protestant church in Wiesbaden, built between 1876 and 1879 by architect Johannes Otzen. Situated above the Kochbrunnen hot springs, it was the city’s second Protestant church and a precursor to the Wiesbadener Programm, which emphasized visibility and unity in worship spaces. The church features a cruciform layout with a central octagonal crossing, a high polygonal choir, and chapel-like sacristies, all reflecting early Rhenish Gothic influences. Constructed in brick with Palatinate sandstone accents, its design balances verticality and intimacy. Consecrated in 1879, Bergkirche became the spiritual heart of the Bergkirchenviertel, historically home to spa workers. Today, it serves both liturgical and cultural functions, hosting concerts and community events. Its architectural integrity and historical resonance make it one of Wiesbaden’s most significant examples of 19th-century ecclesiastical design.
