Burg Sonnenberg rises above the Wiesbaden district of the same name and is one of the city’s most striking medieval landmarks. Built around 1200 by the Counts of Nassau, the fortress was intended to protect Wiesbaden from the rival Lords of Eppstein and to secure control over the surrounding trade routes. In 1292, Count Adolf of Nassau, who briefly became King of Germany, resided here, underlining the castle’s political importance. Though partially destroyed in later centuries, the ruins still convey the power of the medieval stronghold, with preserved walls, towers, and gates offering a glimpse into its former grandeur. Today, visitors can explore the remains, enjoy sweeping views over the Taunus foothills, and visit the small Burgmuseum housed in the keep, which displays archaeological finds and models of the castle’s history. Burg Sonnenberg is also a cultural venue, hosting concerts and the annual Burgfestspiele, which bring new life to its ancient stones. As both a ruin and a stage, it remains a vivid reminder of Wiesbaden’s medieval heritage.
Wiesbaden GermanyBurg Sonnenberg is located on a mountain spur above the Sonnenberg district in the northeastern part of Wiesbaden. The castle, built around 1201-1203 by the Counts Henry II and Robert IV of Nassau, served historically to protect Wiesbaden from neighboring lords. Today, the castle remains are a prominent landmark offering scenic views over Wiesbaden and the surrounding Taunus mountains. Nearby attractions include the scenic Goldstein Valley, famous for its hiking trails and outdoor recreational opportunities, as well as the Sonnenberg district with its historic center and residential areas. The site is accessible via local roads and is a short drive from Wiesbaden’s city center, blending historical significance with natural beauty.
