Oraniendenkmal

About

The Oraniendenkmal on Luisenplatz in Wiesbaden is a war memorial dedicated to the 1st Nassau Field Artillery Regiment No. 27 “Oranien,” erected in 1934. Designed by sculptor Paul Scheurich and executed by Max Sperlich, the monument features a bronze prancing horse atop a pedestal inscribed with the names of World War I battle sites. It commemorates the regiment’s service and fallen soldiers, reflecting the military heritage of Wiesbaden and its ties to the House of Orange-Nassau. The inscription reads, “Dem Vaterland getreu bleibe ich bis in den Tod” (“Faithful to the fatherland until death”). In 1989, a plaque was added to honor Hermann Kaiser, a resistance fighter and one of the monument’s initiators, executed in 1945. The Oraniendenkmal stands as both a tribute to military sacrifice and a reminder of civic memory, blending historical reverence with post-war reflection.
