Iglesia de San Clemente

Iglesia de San Clemente
About

Iglesia de San Clemente is one of Segovia’s most atmospheric Romanesque churches, quietly tucked into the historic centre yet rich in architectural character. Dating from the twelfth century, it reflects the city’s distinctive style with its warm stone, semicircular arches, and an elegant arcaded gallery that adds rhythm and depth to the exterior. The church’s tower, sturdy and understated, rises above the surrounding streets as a reminder of its medieval origins. Inside, the space is intimate and serene, with simple lines, sculpted capitals, and traces of ancient decoration that evoke centuries of devotion. San Clemente has long been linked to local guilds and neighbourhood life, giving it a strong sense of community identity. Though less visited than Segovia’s larger temples, it offers a quiet, authentic glimpse into the city’s Romanesque heritage.

Location

The Iglesia de San Clemente is located in Segovia’s historic centre, on Avenida del Acueducto (also signposted as Avenida de Fernández Ladreda), just a short walk from the Roman Aqueduct at Plaza del Azoguejo, near the commercial promenade between the Aqueduct and the Cathedral. It stands in the heart of the old town, only about 200–300 metres from the Roman Aqueduct and Plaza del Azoguejo, very close to Segovia’s Cathedral and an easy walk from the Alcázar, Plaza Mayor, and the Jewish Quarter (Judería). Nearby are the Church of San Millán, the Church of San Sebastián, Casa de los Picos, the Torreón de Lozoya, and the Centro Didáctico de la Judería, with the city’s main tourist office, museums, and numerous restaurants and cafés all within a few minutes on foot through Segovia’s medieval streets.
