Puerta de Santiago is one of the most striking gateways of Segovia’s medieval walls, standing at the western edge of the city where the ancient road to Zamarramala once began. Built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it combines defensive strength with artistic detail, featuring a robust tower and a pointed Gothic arch that frames the entrance. The exterior is adorned with a sculpted image of Saint James, protector of travellers, which gave the gate its name. For centuries it served as a key point of control and protection, guarding access to the city while welcoming merchants, pilgrims, and visitors. Today Puerta de Santiago remains beautifully preserved, offering a powerful sense of arrival and a vivid reminder of Segovia’s strategic importance and rich medieval heritage.

Location

The Puerta de Santiago is located in Segovia, Spain, on the northwestern edge of the historic old town, integrated into the city’s medieval walls along Paseo de San Juan de la Cruz. It stands just in front of the walking promenade known as Paseo de San Juan de la Cruz and lies close to the Real Casa de la Moneda (Royal Mint), the Colección de Títeres Francisco Peralta housed within the gate itself, and the Jardín de los Poetas, with the Segovia Cathedral, Plaza Mayor, and the rest of the walled old town within a short walk.
