The Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew is one of Wrocław’s most distinctive sacred complexes, standing proudly on Ostrów Tumski, the city’s oldest district. This rare two‑storey Gothic church, begun in the 13th century, reflects the growing power of the Silesian Piasts, who intended it as a monumental symbol of their rule. The upper church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, impresses with its soaring vaults and elegant stonework, while the lower church of St. Bartholomew offers a more intimate, atmospheric space shaped by centuries of devotion. Despite damage and reconstruction over the ages, the building retains its medieval character, highlighted by pointed arches, slender pillars, and carefully restored façades. Surrounded by historic streets and gas lamps, the church forms a key part of Wrocław’s spiritual and architectural heart, inviting visitors to explore both its layered history and its serene, contemplative interior.

The Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew is located on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) in Wrocław, at Plac Kościelny 1, just off the Tumski Bridge and within the historic ecclesiastical core of the city. Nearby you will find the Archcathedral of St. John the Baptist, the Cathedral Island walkway along the Oder River, the Tumski Bridge, the St. John of Nepomuk monument, and the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław, all within a short stroll along the island’s religious and green spaces.
