The Church of St. Mary on the Sand is one of Wrocław’s most elegant Gothic landmarks, set on the quiet island of Piasek at the edge of the Odra River. Built in the 14th century, it reflects the height of medieval craftsmanship, with its tall brick façade, pointed arches, and slender windows that fill the interior with soft, coloured light. Although the church suffered severe destruction during the Second World War, its careful post‑war reconstruction restored much of its original harmony and atmosphere. Inside, visitors find a serene, spacious nave, a beautifully carved main altar, and a sense of calm that contrasts with the lively streets just across the bridges. The church’s location makes it a natural gateway to Ostrów Tumski, and its silhouette at sunset is one of the city’s most recognisable views. Today, St. Mary on the Sand stands as a testament to Wrocław’s resilience, artistic heritage, and enduring spiritual traditions.

The Church of St. Mary on the Sand is located on Piasek Island (Wyspa Piasek) in the Oder River, in central Wrocław, at Katedralna 4, within the island’s historic ecclesiastical ensemble. Nearby you will find the Tumski Bridge, Cathedral Island with the Archcathedral of St. John the Baptist and the Archbishop’s Palace, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin on Sand Island, the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław, and the Market Hall, all within easy walking distance along the river and surrounding streets.
