The Church of St. Giles is the oldest surviving church in Wrocław and a quiet treasure of Ostrów Tumski. Built in the early 13th century, it represents the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, with thick stone walls, simple arches, and a modest, harmonious interior that reflects the spiritual austerity of its era. Despite its small size, the church holds great historical significance, having served as a place of worship for generations of clergy and scholars connected to the nearby cathedral. Its survival through wars, fires, and urban transformation makes it one of the city’s most authentic medieval spaces. The Church of St. Giles is located on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) in Wrocław, at Świętego Idziego 4/6, just north of the main Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Plac Katedralny. Nearby you will find the Wrocław Cathedral, the Cathedral Chapter House, the Museum of the Archdiocese of Wrocław, the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław, and the Tumski Bridge, all within a short walk across the island or along the Oder River.
