HMS Småland in Gothenburg is the largest preserved warship in Scandinavia and one of the highlights of the Maritiman maritime museum. Launched in 1952 and commissioned in 1956, this Halland‑class destroyer served as one of Sweden’s most powerful naval vessels until her decommissioning in 1979. Designed for speed, endurance, and advanced weapons systems, she stretches 121 metres in length and once carried a peacetime crew of 272. Her steel superstructure, long internal passageways, and powerful steam‑turbine machinery reflect Cold War engineering built to withstand harsh conditions. Today, visitors can step aboard to explore narrow corridors, command areas, and engine rooms that reveal the daily routines and technical complexity of life at sea.
