Skansen Lejonet is a striking 17th‑century fortress rising above Gothenburg’s eastern approach, built as part of the city’s defensive ring during a period of regional conflict. Completed in 1694, its massive stone walls, circular form, and commanding hilltop position were designed to protect the young city from invasion. Although it never faced battle, the fortress became a powerful symbol of Gothenburg’s resilience and strategic importance. Over time it shifted from military use to heritage landmark, preserving its characteristic lion statue and panoramic views across the rail yards and cityscape. Today Skansen Lejonet serves as a historic venue for events and ceremonies, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the city’s early fortifications while standing as one of its most recognisable architectural silhouettes.

Skansen Lejonet is located on the hill Gullberg in the northern part of Gothenburg’s city centre, with its address at Emerentias backe 25, 411 04 Gothenburg, very close to Gothenburg Central Station and the main rail tracks. The 17th‑century redoubt sits just above the busy Södra Älvstranden waterfront, offering sweeping views over the river and the city. Nearby you will find the city centre with Avenyn, Kungsportsplatsen, Nordstan shopping centre, the opera house, Scandinavium arena, and the walking and cycling routes along the river, making it easy to combine a visit to Skansen Lejonet with a stroll through the urban core or a coffee break in the surrounding streets.
