Skansen Lejonet is a striking 17th‑century fortress rising above Gothenburg’s eastern approach, built as part of the city’s defensive ring during a period of regional conflict. Completed in 1694, its massive stone walls, circular form, and commanding hilltop position were designed to protect the young city from invasion. Although it never faced battle, the fortress became a powerful symbol of Gothenburg’s resilience and strategic importance. Over time it shifted from military use to heritage landmark, preserving its characteristic lion statue and panoramic views across the rail yards and cityscape.
