Skansen Kronan is one of Gothenburg’s most recognisable landmarks, a 17th‑century hilltop fortress overlooking the Haga district and the city’s western skyline. Completed in 1697 as part of Sweden’s coastal defences, its thick granite walls and distinctive copper‑clad roof give it a powerful, enduring presence. Although it never saw battle, the fortress has served many roles over the centuries, from military storage to prison and later a historic monument. The 17th‑century redoubt sits above the historic Haga neighbourhood, within easy walking distance of Haga’s cafés, boutiques, and cobblestone streets, and is just a short tram ride from Kungsportsplatsen and the main city centre.
