New Älvsborg Fortress stands on the island of Kyrkogårdsholmen at the mouth of the Göta River, guarding the entrance to Gothenburg since the late 17th century. Built to replace the older inland fortress, it became one of Sweden’s most important coastal strongholds, designed to withstand naval attacks during a turbulent era. Its thick stone ramparts, bastions, and moat form a classic star‑shaped defence system that remains remarkably well preserved. The fortress saw action during the Danish siege of 1719, a defining moment that cemented its place in Swedish military history.
