Carolus XI Rex Bastion is a preserved fragment of Gothenburg’s original 17th‑century fortifications, offering a rare glimpse into the city’s early defensive system. Built during the reign of King Charles XI, the bastion formed part of the star‑shaped walls that once protected the young trading city from coastal threats. Its sturdy stone structure and strategic position reflect the military engineering of the era, when Gothenburg was a vital stronghold on Sweden’s western frontier. Although most of the fortifications were later dismantled as the city expanded, this bastion remains an evocative reminder of that fortified past. Today it stands quietly within the urban landscape, connecting modern Gothenburg with the architectural and strategic ambitions that shaped its foundation.

Carolus XI Rex Bastion is located at Esperantoplatsen in central Gothenburg, on the remains of the old city fortifications near the western side of the city centre. It overlooks the canal and the Stenpiren area, with views toward Järntorget and the surrounding inner city. Nearby you will find the lively Linné and Haga districts, with cafés, restaurants, shops, and walking routes along the waterways, as well as easy access to central Gothenburg’s main streets and attractions.
