Galery of Jozef Kollár

About

The Gallery of Jozef Kollár in Banská Štiavnica is one of Slovakia’s most atmospheric art spaces, housed in a historic burgher house just steps from the town’s iconic Holy Trinity Square. Named after the local painter Jozef Kollár, whose work captures the poetic landscapes and mining heritage of the region, the gallery serves as both a tribute to his legacy and a broader showcase of Slovak fine art. Inside, visitors can explore an extensive collection of Kollár’s paintings, including expressive depictions of Štiavnica’s hills, mining architecture, and quiet rural corners. His ability to blend realism with lyrical colour makes these works a highlight of the museum. The gallery also presents works by other Slovak artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, offering a rich overview of national artistic development. One of the most interesting features is the building itself: vaulted rooms, wooden ceilings, and preserved historical details create an intimate setting that enhances the viewing experience. Temporary exhibitions frequently introduce contemporary artists, photography, or thematic projects connected to the town’s cultural identity.
