Holy Trinity Square

About

Holy Trinity Square is the vibrant heart of Banská Štiavnica, a space where the town’s mining wealth, civic pride, and Baroque artistry meet. Formed in the 16th and 17th centuries, it became the ceremonial centre of the mining guilds, who gathered here for processions and public announcements. Its most striking feature is the monumental Holy Trinity Column, built after a devastating plague as a symbol of gratitude and protection. The column’s sculptural details—saints, angels, and swirling Baroque ornament—reward slow, attentive viewing. Around the square stand elegant burgher houses with Renaissance and Baroque façades, many hiding arcaded courtyards and old mining offices. Inside the former town hall, visitors can explore exhibitions that reveal how Štiavnica’s self‑governing mining community once operated. The square also offers access to St. Catherine’s Church, whose Gothic interior adds a contemplative counterpoint to the lively public space. Today, Holy Trinity Square remains the town’s social stage, hosting concerts, markets, and festivals that echo centuries of communal life.

Holy Trinity Square is the beautiful main square in the center of Banská Štiavnica. In the middle stands the Baroque Plague Column with a sculpture of the Holy Trinity, built as thanks for the end of the plague epidemic of 1710–1711 and later rebuilt by sculptor Dionýz Stanetti. The square is surrounded by historic mining houses, including the Hallenbach House with the Mining Museum and the building of the Jozef Kollár Gallery. Near the square, you can visit the Old Castle perched above it, the Town Hall, and the Gothic Church of St. Catherine just a short walk away. The famous Banská Štiavnica Calvary pilgrimage site on the hill, the New Castle, the Open-Air Mining Museum, the Main Street with its historic buildings, and the system of tajchy (man-made lakes) such as Počúvadlo Lake are also within easy walking distance, making this square the perfect starting point for exploring one of Slovakia’s most enchanting historic towns.
