Calvary of Banská Štiavnica

About

Calvary of Banská Štiavnica is one of the most remarkable Baroque calvaries in Europe, dramatically set on Scharffenberg Hill and visible from almost every corner of the town. Built in the mid‑18th century, it was financed largely by local mining guilds, whose prosperity allowed for an unusually ambitious complex of chapels, gateways, and two churches arranged along a symbolic pilgrimage route. Its creators intended not only a devotional path but also a monumental artistic statement celebrating faith in a mining community often marked by danger and uncertainty. Walking the ascent reveals richly decorated chapels illustrating the Stations of the Cross, each with expressive reliefs and vivid Baroque ornament. The Lower Church welcomes visitors with painted ceilings and an intimate atmosphere, while the Upper Church—perched near the summit—offers sweeping views over Štiavnica’s volcanic landscape. Inside, visitors can admire restored frescoes, altars, and period devotional objects that survived centuries of weather and conflict. The combination of spiritual symbolism, dramatic scenery, and artistic detail makes the Calvary an unforgettable part of the town’s heritage.

Location

The Calvary of Banská Štiavnica is one of the most beautiful Baroque calvaries in Central Europe, built between 1744 and 1751 by the Jesuits on Scharfenberg hill above the town. It consists of 23 structures including three churches – the Lower Church, the Holy Stairway (Sväté schody), and the Upper Church with its distinctive twin towers – as well as 19 chapels, a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, the Prison (Ecce homo) station, and the Holy Sepulchre. The complex is famous for its magnificent frescoes and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993 together with the town. The Calvary area is freely accessible all year round. From the town centre, you can reach the top of the hill in less than 45 minutes by walking. Nearby attractions include Holy Trinity Square with its Baroque plague column, the Old Castle above the square, the Town Hall, and the Gothic Church of St. Catherine just a short walk away. The New Castle on Frauenberg Hill, the Open-Air Mining Museum, the Main Street with historic mining houses, and the system of tajchy man-made lakes such as Počúvadlo Lake are also within easy reach, making the Calvary a perfect highlight for a full day of cultural and natural exploration in this enchanting UNESCO town.
