Kammerhof is one of the most historically significant buildings in Banská Štiavnica, once serving as the administrative heart of the royal mining operations that made the town one of Europe’s richest centres of silver extraction. Its origins reach back to the 13th century, but the complex grew over time into a labyrinth of courtyards, vaulted halls, and offices where mining officials, surveyors, and royal inspectors worked. The building’s layered architecture reflects centuries of expansion, adaptation, and the constant need to manage the region’s demanding mining industry. Inside, Kammerhof houses the core exhibitions of the Slovak Mining Museum. Visitors can explore detailed models of medieval and early‑modern mines, showing how miners carved deep shafts into volcanic rock. One of the most interesting features is the reconstructed mining tunnel, which allows you to walk through a realistic underground passage complete with tools, timber supports, and sound effects. The exhibition also presents original measuring instruments, maps, and documents that reveal how advanced Štiavnica’s mining science once was.
