The Banská Štiavnica Nativity Scene (Banskoštiavnický Betlehem) is one of the town’s most charming and unusual attractions, blending traditional Christmas imagery with the rich mining history of the region. Created by local woodcarver Peter Chovan, it is a monumental wooden tableau that took many years to complete. Instead of focusing solely on biblical scenes, the artist incorporated miniature versions of Štiavnica’s landmarks, mines, and everyday life, turning the nativity into a carved portrait of the entire town. Inside, visitors can admire more than a hundred hand‑carved figures, many of them animated. Miners swing tools, water wheels turn, and small workshops come to life through delicate mechanical movement. One of the most interesting features is the detailed reconstruction of the town’s terraced landscape, including Calvary, Old Castle, New Castle, and the colourful houses of the historic centre. The nativity scene also highlights the region’s mining identity: tiny tunnels, ore carts, and working miners appear alongside shepherds and angels, creating a unique fusion of sacred and local themes. The warm wooden interior and soft lighting make the display especially atmospheric, offering a peaceful, almost nostalgic glimpse into Štiavnica’s spirit.
