About

Botanical Garden of the Forestry and Wood Sciences School in Banská Štiavnica is a peaceful green enclave shaped by the town’s long forestry tradition. Established in the 19th century as a teaching garden, it served as an open‑air classroom where future foresters learned to identify, cultivate, and protect Central European tree species. Today it preserves this educational spirit while offering visitors a quiet retreat just steps from the historic centre. The garden features an impressive collection of native and exotic trees, including towering sequoias, rare firs, and old larches that reflect the region’s silvicultural heritage. Winding paths lead through themed sections, each showing different forest ecosystems and their role in sustainable woodland management. Visitors can also explore small experimental plots where students still study growth patterns and climate resilience. In spring and summer, the garden becomes a haven for birds and pollinators, adding a lively natural soundtrack to the shaded benches and open lawns. It’s a gentle, informative stop that reveals how deeply forestry is woven into Štiavnica’s identity.
