Church of St. Catherine in Banská Štiavnica is one of the town’s most charming Gothic landmarks, built in the late 15th century and dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of miners. Its location on the historic Trojičné Square made it the spiritual heart of the mining community, and for centuries it hosted guild ceremonies, town gatherings, and important civic events. A distinctive feature is its slightly leaning tower, a result of unstable ground shaped by old mining tunnels beneath the town. Inside, the church offers a calm, atmospheric interior with rib‑vaulted ceilings and traces of medieval wall paintings. The main altar, crafted in the Baroque period, stands out with elegant sculptures and gilded details. Visitors can also see preserved Gothic stonework, a carved pulpit, and several side altars reflecting the town’s prosperous mining past. The church is still used for concerts, making its acoustics another memorable part of the experience.

The Church of St. Catherine is a beautiful late Gothic church in the old town of Banská Štiavnica. It stands between Holy Trinity Square and Town Hall Square, close to the main pedestrian area. The church is famous for its star-shaped vault, original Gothic details, and a historic crypt beneath where important citizens of the town were buried. Near the church, you can explore Holy Trinity Square lined with charming Renaissance mining houses, the Old Castle above the square, and the Town Hall. Just a short walk away is the Banská Štiavnica Calvary, a striking Baroque pilgrimage site on a hill with an upper church and two towers. The Open-Air Mining Museum, old mine tunnels, and the town’s botanical garden are also nearby, making the area perfect for a cultural and historical day trip in this beautiful “Europe’s Eldorado” mining town.
