New Castle in Banská Štiavnica is a striking Renaissance fortress built in the 1560s as part of the town’s anti‑Ottoman defense system. Its six‑storey silhouette, shaped like a massive stone tower with tiered firing galleries, was designed for early artillery warfare—an unusual feature that makes it one of Slovakia’s most distinctive strongholds. The castle also served as a watchtower: guards once signalled danger to the surrounding mining settlements using fire and smoke. Inside, visitors find a museum dedicated to the region’s military history. Exhibits include original weapons, armour, and models showing how the town’s fortifications evolved. The upper floors explore the daily life of soldiers stationed here, while the top terrace offers one of the finest panoramas of Štiavnica’s volcanic landscape. A small chapel, preserved within the fortress walls, adds a quieter historical layer. The combination of defensive engineering, Renaissance architecture, and sweeping views makes the New Castle a compelling stop in the town’s heritage circuit.

New Castle is one of the most recognizable monuments in Banská Štiavnica. It stands on a hill above the old town, where it once served as a defensive fortress guarding the city. Today it is a museum and offers visitors a chance to explore the history of the region from inside its historic walls. The castle is a great place to visit for both its architecture and its views over the town and surrounding hills. Nearby, you can also see the Old Castle, Holy Trinity Square, the Calvary, and the narrow streets of the UNESCO-listed historic centre.
