Old Castle

Old Castle in Banská Štiavnica is one of Slovakia’s most atmospheric fortifications, a former Gothic church transformed into a defensive stronghold during the Ottoman threat. Its unusual origin gives it a layered character: sacred architecture fused with bastions, walls, and a commanding tower that once guarded the mining town’s wealth. Inside, visitors find a rich museum tracing local history from prehistory to the mining boom, including archaeological finds, medieval weapons, and period furnishings. The former church nave now hosts exhibitions on the town’s fortifications, while the tower rewards those who climb it with sweeping views over Štiavnica’s volcanic hills. A highlight is the lapidarium, displaying carved stone fragments that reveal how the site evolved over centuries. The castle’s courtyard often hosts cultural events, adding a lively contrast to its ancient walls.
