Mozart’s Birthplace on Salzburg’s Getreidegasse is one of Austria’s most visited cultural sites, offering an intimate look at the early life of the city’s most famous son. The museum occupies the apartment where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756, and many of the rooms preserve their original layout, giving visitors a sense of middle‑class urban life in the 18th century. Among the most compelling objects is Mozart’s childhood violin, displayed alongside family portraits and letters that reveal the dynamics of a household filled with ambition, discipline, and musical talent. The exhibition also explores the role of Leopold Mozart, both as a composer and as the driving force behind his son’s early tours across Europe. Detailed models and period instruments illustrate how music was taught, performed, and composed in Mozart’s time. One room focuses on his operas, showing stage designs and costumes that highlight the theatrical world he helped transform. Another examines daily life in Salzburg, offering context for the sounds, customs, and influences that shaped his earliest works.
Salzburg Austria
Mozart’s Birthplace is located at Getreidegasse 9 in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, on its most famous and historic shopping street. The building, also called the Hagenauer Haus, sits near Makartplatz Square, just a few minutes from Salzburg Cathedral and the main pedestrian zone. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on 27 January 1756 on the third floor, and the house is now a well-preserved museum showing his life, family, and musical work. Visitors can see period rooms, instruments, portraits, and documents about the young composer’s early career. Just steps away, you reach Salzburg Cathedral, the Baroque masterpiece with its twin green-domed towers and large central dome. From there, Hohensalzburg Fortress is a pleasant uphill walk, offering sweeping views over the entire Old Town and the Salzach River. Getreidegasse itself is lined with colorful historic buildings, traditional iron shop signs, boutiques, and cafes, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll. The Haus der Natur, a popular natural science museum especially for families, is nearby on the same street. Across the river, Mirabell Palace and its Baroque gardens are a short walk, and a short trip leads to Hellbrunn Palace with its famous trick fountains and zoo.
