Toy Museum Salzburg

About

The Toy Museum Salzburg, housed in the historic Bürgerspital, offers a lively journey through childhood across the last two centuries. Its charm lies in how playthings reveal social history: miniature kitchens, tin soldiers, and early board games show how children learned skills, imagined worlds, and mirrored adult life. One of the most captivating sections is the collection of mechanical toys, where wind‑up figures and clockwork animals demonstrate the ingenuity of pre‑digital entertainment. A highlight for many visitors is the extensive display of model railways, complete with detailed landscapes and moving trains. The museum also preserves beautifully crafted dolls and dollhouses, some more than a century old, offering a glimpse into domestic life as imagined by past generations. Interactive stations invite children to experiment with puzzles, building sets, and classic games, making the museum both nostalgic and hands‑on. Temporary exhibitions often explore themes such as storytelling, craftsmanship, or the evolution of toys in the 20th century, adding fresh perspectives to the permanent collection. Together, these displays create a warm, playful atmosphere that appeals to families, collectors, and anyone curious about the cultural history of play.
