Mirabell Palace is one of Salzburg’s most elegant landmarks, famed for its harmonious Baroque design and its role in the city’s courtly life. Built in 1606 by Prince‑Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his beloved Salome Alt, the palace later became a formal residence of the prince‑archbishops and was redesigned in the 18th century to achieve the refined symmetry seen today. Its gardens, immortalised in film and admired for centuries, form a perfect geometric frame around the palace. Inside, the highlight is the Marble Hall, considered one of the most beautiful wedding halls in Europe. Once used for musical performances by the Mozart family, it dazzles with stucco marble, crystal chandeliers, and soft natural light. The Grand Staircase is another masterpiece: its playful putti and ornate balustrades showcase the artistry of Georg Raphael Donner’s workshop. While much of the palace now houses municipal offices, visitors can still explore these historic interiors and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the Mirabell Gardens. The Pegasus Fountain, the Dwarf Garden, and the precisely aligned flower parterres offer a blend of mythology, humour, and Baroque order.
Salzburg Austria
Mirabell Palace sits on the right bank of the Salzach River, in Salzburg’s Neustadt district. Built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his beloved Salome Alt, the palace was later redesigned in Baroque style and today serves as a venue for weddings and classical concerts. The palace itself is admired for the Marble Hall, considered one of the world’s most beautiful wedding venues, with intricate stucco work, frescoes, and marble detailing. The real draw for most visitors is Mirabell Gardens, laid out in 1690 and framed by sculpted hedges, mythological statues, and vibrant flowerbeds. The gardens became world-famous through The Sound of Music, where Maria and the children danced around the Pegasus Fountain and sang “Do-Re-Mi” on the steps. From the central axis you get a postcard-perfect view of Hohensalzburg Fortress rising above the Old Town. Because of its riverside location, Mirabell Palace is a short walk from many of Salzburg’s highlights. Cross the Makartsteg footbridge and you’re in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old Town within ten minutes. There you’ll find Getreidegasse with Mozart’s Birthplace, Salzburg Cathedral, Residenzplatz, and St. Peter’s Abbey with its historic cemetery. The Museum der Moderne on Mönchsberg is nearby via the elevator at Anton-Neumayr-Platz. Linzer Gasse, a lively street with cafés and boutiques, begins right outside the palace grounds.
