DomQuartier Salzburg

About

DomQuartier Salzburg weaves together the city’s religious and princely heritage into one seamless cultural route. Created after the 2014 reopening of long‑closed state rooms, it reconnects the Cathedral, the Residenz, and the Benedictine monastery—spaces that once formed the ceremonial heart of the prince‑archbishops’ power. The result is a rare opportunity to walk through an intact Baroque complex that functioned as both a spiritual centre and a political stage. Inside, visitors encounter the lavish State Rooms, where stuccoed ceilings, frescoes, and ornate furniture reveal the splendour of courtly life. The Residenz Gallery presents European painting from the 16th to 19th centuries, including works by Rembrandt’s circle and Italian masters. From here, the route leads to the Cathedral Museum, home to medieval sculptures, liturgical treasures, and the famous Rupertus Cross, one of Salzburg’s oldest sacred objects. A highlight is the terrace above the Cathedral Archway, offering a unique view over the Domplatz and the Baroque skyline. The tour continues into the monastery’s Long Gallery, once used for scholarly contemplation, now displaying religious art that spans a millennium. Together, these spaces form a cultural corridor that reveals how art, faith, and political authority shaped Salzburg’s identity.

Location

The DomQuartier Salzburg is located in the pedestrian zone at the center of Salzburg’s Old Town, on Residenzplatz 1 / Domplatz 1a, directly between the majestic Salzburg Cathedral and the grand Residenz Palace (Prince-Archbishop’s Palace). It sits above Salzburg’s most important squares: Residenzplatz with the Residenzbrunnen fountain, Domplatz with St. Mary’s Column, and Alter Markt, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City. Near the DomQuartier, you can easily walk to Mozart’s Birthplace on Getreidegasse 9, just a few minutes away, and the Mozart Residence on Makartplatz 8, where the composer lived from 1773 to 1780. A short uphill walk leads to Hohensalzburg Fortress, the imposing castle overlooking the entire Old Town with sweeping views of the city and the Salzach River. The historic Getreidegasse shopping street with its distinctive iron signs and boutiques is just steps away, and St. Peter’s Abbey, considered the oldest monastery still in existence in the German-speaking world, is nearby with its atmospheric cemetery and Romanescore church. Across the river, Mirabell Palace and Gardens are within walking distance, and a short trip leads to Hellbrunn Palace with its famous trick fountains and Salzburg Zoo.
