VEGA Observatory

About

The VEGA Observatory in Salzburg is a modern gateway to the night sky, located on the rooftop of the Haus der Natur’s Science Center. Opened in 2018, it was named after the bright star Vega, symbolising clarity and exploration. Though compact, it is one of Austria’s most advanced urban observatories, designed to bring astronomy closer to the public. Inside, the main attraction is the powerful 400‑mm reflecting telescope, capable of revealing lunar craters, Saturn’s rings, and distant star clusters even from within the city. The observatory also houses smaller instruments used for demonstrations and astrophotography, making it an active learning environment rather than a static display. Visitors can enjoy guided evening sessions where experts explain celestial objects visible that night. The retractable dome creates an immersive experience as it opens to the sky, and the rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of Salzburg framed by the Mönchsberg and the fortress.

Location

The VEGA Observatory Salzburg (VEGA-Sternwarte Haus der Natur) is located on the Haunsberg near Nußdorf am Haunsberg, about 20 kilometres north of Salzburg city centre in the Salzburg Seenland lake district, roughly a 30-minute drive from the city. The observatory belongs to the House of Nature (Haus der Natur) but is situated outside the city on the Haunsberg and cannot be reached by public transport; visitors must drive or take a private car. Near the VEGA Observatory, the main attraction is the surrounding Salzburg Seenland area, known for its lakes, including Obertrumer See and Pöschlsee, which are ideal for walking, cycling, and water activities. The House of Nature museum in Salzburg city, which operates the observatory, is about 20 km away and features natural history exhibitions, aquariums, and a zoo. For visitors coming from Salzburg, the city’s top sights are a short drive away, including the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart’s Birthplace, the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, Getreidegasse, Hellbrunn Palace with its trick fountains, and the Salzburg Cathedral, all within the UNESCO-listed Old Town. The VEGA Observatory is best suited for those planning a dedicated trip for astronomy and stargazing, ideally combined with a visit to the lakes and a day exploring Salzburg’s historic centre.
