Felsenreitschule

About

The Felsenreitschule is one of Salzburg’s most dramatic performance spaces, carved directly into the Mönchsberg cliff in the late 17th century. Originally built as an open riding school for the prince‑archbishops, it featured 96 arcaded niches cut into the rock—once used to display sculptures and now an iconic backdrop for opera productions. Its transformation into a theatre began in the 1920s, when the Salzburg Festival adopted the space for large‑scale performances. Inside, the atmosphere is unlike any other venue in the city. The vast stone wall dominates the stage, giving every production a raw, elemental quality. Modern interventions—such as the retractable roof and advanced stage technology—allow the space to shift from intimate concerts to monumental operas. The acoustics are surprisingly warm, softened by the natural rock. Visitors can admire the sweeping auditorium, the cliff‑face arcades, and the ingenious stage machinery that enables rapid scene changes. The Felsenreitschule is also famous for its appearance in The Sound of Music, where Maria and the children perform “Edelweiss,” adding a layer of cinematic nostalgia to its already rich history.

Location

The Felsenreitschule (literally “Rock Riding School”) is a historic theatre carved into the Mönchsberg mountain in Salzburg. It is located at Hofstallgasse 1, right in the heart of the city’s UNESCO-listed old town, just a short walk from the main squares and historic streets. Near the Felsenreitschule, you can easily visit many of Salzburg’s top attractions. The Haus für Mozart and the Large Festival Hall are just steps away, all part of the same festival complex. Residenzplatz and the Salzburg Cathedral are within a few minutes’ walk, as is the DomQuartier, which includes the old Residenz Palace. Mozarts Geburtshaus in Getreidegasse, one of the city’s most iconic addresses, is also close by. The nearby Mirabell Palace and Gardens, with its famous “Do-Re-Mi” scene from The Sound of Music, are a little further but still on a comfortable walking route, and the Hohensalzburg Fortress, looming above the city, can be reached via a short walk or lift from the old town. The Felsenreitschule is therefore an ideal stop for visitors who want to combine architecture, music, and the best of Salzburg’s historic centre.
