Botanischer Garten der Universität Salzburg

About

The Botanical Garden of the University of Salzburg is a compact but richly curated oasis in the Freisaal district, designed as both a research site and a peaceful retreat. Established in the 1980s and continually expanded, it showcases around 3,000 plant species arranged in themed outdoor areas and modern greenhouses that highlight global biodiversity. Visitors can explore the Alpine section, where hardy mountain plants grow among carefully placed rocks, echoing the landscapes of the Northern Limestone Alps. The Mediterranean and steppe zones contrast this with sun‑loving shrubs, herbs, and grasses. One of the most engaging areas is the medicinal and useful plants collection, reflecting Salzburg’s long tradition of herbal knowledge linked to figures like Paracelsus. Inside the greenhouses, the tropical and subtropical collections offer a striking change of atmosphere. Towering palms, orchids, bromeliads, and carnivorous plants create a dense, humid world filled with unusual textures and colours. The cactus and succulent house is another highlight, displaying dramatic forms from arid regions.
