The Botanical Garden of the University of Salzburg is a compact but richly curated oasis in the Freisaal district, designed as both a research site and a peaceful retreat. Established in the 1980s and continually expanded, it showcases around 3,000 plant species arranged in themed outdoor areas and modern greenhouses that highlight global biodiversity. Visitors can explore the Alpine section, where hardy mountain plants grow among carefully placed rocks, echoing the landscapes of the Northern Limestone Alps. The Mediterranean and steppe zones contrast this with sun‑loving shrubs, herbs, and grasses. One of the most engaging areas is the medicinal and useful plants collection, reflecting Salzburg’s long tradition of herbal knowledge linked to figures like Paracelsus. Inside the greenhouses, the tropical and subtropical collections offer a striking change of atmosphere. Towering palms, orchids, bromeliads, and carnivorous plants create a dense, humid world filled with unusual textures and colours. The cactus and succulent house is another highlight, displaying dramatic forms from arid regions.

The Botanischer Garten der Universität Salzburg (University of Salzburg Botanical Garden) is located at Hellbrunnerstraße 34 in the Nonntal district, just south of Salzburg’s Old Town, next to the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Paris-Lodron Universität Salzburg. The garden covers about one hectare and features outdoor exhibits with sections from central Europe and other regions, as well as greenhouse collections. Near the botanical garden, you can easily reach several popular attractions. The House of Nature (Haus der Natur), one of Salzburg’s top museums for science and natural history, is only a short walk away at roughly 600 metres. The Salzburg Zoo is also nearby, about 900 metres from the garden, making it ideal for families and nature lovers. A comfortable walk leads into the Old Town, where you can visit the Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens, famous for their baroque design and as a filming location for The Sound of Music. From there, Getreidegasse, Mozart’s Birthplace, the Salzburg Cathedral, and the Hohensalzburg Fortress are all within easy walking distance. The garden’s position near the university and these attractions makes it a quiet, scenic stop for visitors who want to combine nature, science, and the best of Salzburg’s historic centre.
