Collegiate Church

About

The Collegiate Church of Salzburg, designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, is one of the purest expressions of Austrian Baroque architecture. Completed in the early 18th century for the University of Salzburg, it was conceived as a space where faith, learning, and artistic ambition met. Its brilliant white façade and elegant twin towers stand out even in a city famed for grand churches. Inside, the church feels unexpectedly bright and weightless. The walls, pillars, and vaults are kept almost entirely white, creating a sense of clarity that reflects the church’s academic origins. This minimalism makes every decorative element stand out: the sculpted stucco garlands, the gilded details, and the dynamic altarpieces that guide the eye toward the high altar. The main altar, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, is a highlight. Its composition draws the viewer upward, symbolising enlightenment and divine inspiration. Look for the side altars as well, each dedicated to a different academic faculty—an unusual and charming detail that links the church directly to university life. The dome, with its harmonious proportions and soft light, is one of the most beautiful in Salzburg. When sunlight enters, the entire interior seems to glow, reinforcing the church’s reputation as a place of serenity and intellectual reflection.
