Salzburger Landestheater

About

The Salzburger Landestheater is the city’s leading stage for drama, opera, ballet, and musical theatre, continuing a tradition of public performance that dates back to the early 18th century. The current building, opened in 1893, blends late‑historicist elegance with a warm, intimate atmosphere that makes it a favourite among locals and festival audiences alike. Inside, the main auditorium is the highlight. Its red‑and‑gold colour scheme, crystal chandeliers, and horseshoe layout evoke the charm of a classic European theatre while still feeling accessible and modern. The acoustics are finely balanced, allowing both spoken theatre and full orchestral productions to shine. Look for the ornate ceiling paintings and decorative stucco that survived multiple renovations, including a major post‑war restoration. The theatre houses several stages, but the Großes Haus remains the heart of the institution. Visitors can admire the orchestra pit, the historic proscenium arch, and the backstage technology that supports ambitious productions throughout the year. The foyer, with its marble details and portraits of past directors, offers a glimpse into Salzburg’s cultural history.
