Mozart Residence

About

Mozart’s Residence on Makartplatz offers a deeper, more mature chapter of the Mozart family story. After leaving their cramped birthplace, the Mozarts moved into this spacious eight‑room apartment in 1773, a setting that reflects their rising status and the intensity of Wolfgang’s creative years. The museum explores this period through manuscripts, instruments, and multimedia displays that trace his development from prodigy to celebrated composer. One of the most compelling objects is the fortepiano, similar to the instruments Mozart used while composing in Salzburg. Nearby, family letters and portraits reveal the dynamics between Wolfgang, Leopold Mozart, and his sister Nannerl, herself a gifted musician whose career was limited by the expectations of the era. A dedicated room examines Mozart’s operatic work, showing stage models and costumes that illustrate how his music reshaped European theatre. The residence also presents a detailed reconstruction of the apartment’s original layout, helping visitors imagine daily life in an 18th‑century musical household. Temporary exhibitions often highlight themes such as touring culture, instrument craftsmanship, or the social world of Salzburg’s court musicians.

Location

The Mozart Residence is located at Makartplatz 8 in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, on the elegant Makartplatz Square just across from the south gate of Mirabell Gardens and north of the Salzach River. The building, known as the Tanzmeisterhaus or “Dance Master’s House,” was where the Mozart family lived from 1773 to 1787. From 1773 to 1780, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed many of his major works here in a spacious eight-room apartment on the first floor. Today the apartment is a museum showcasing Mozart’s life, instruments, portraits, and documents from his mature period in Salzburg. Directly opposite the residence is the famous confectionery Fürst, known for its Mozartkugeln, and nearby is Café Tomaselli, the oldest coffee house in Austria. Just a short walk away, you reach Salzburg Cathedral, the Baroque masterpiece with its twin green-domed towers, and the DomQuartier with the Prince Archbishop’s Palace and Residenz Galleries. The International Mozarteum Foundation is also very close, and the area hosts concerts in the Golden Hall and Vienna Hall, especially during Mozart Week. This central location makes the Mozart Residence the perfect place to explore Salzburg’s Mozart heritage, Baroque architecture, and scenic river views in one walkable area.
