Meštrovićeve Crikvine – Kaštilac is one of Split’s most atmospheric artistic sites, a secluded sanctuary where Ivan Meštrović fused sculpture, architecture, and spirituality into a single, contemplative whole. Built in the 1930s on the foundations of a small Dalmatian fort, the complex was designed as a place for quiet reflection, shaped by stone courtyards, cypress trees, and the rhythm of the sea. One of the most interesting facts is that Meštrović donated the entire ensemble to the Croatian people, intending it as a cultural and spiritual gift. Inside the central chapel, visitors encounter Meštrović’s extraordinary wooden reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Christ. Carved with deep emotion and modern expressiveness, these panels are among his most personal works. Their warm tones and dramatic lines create an intimate dialogue between faith and artistry. The surrounding cloister-like spaces display additional sculptures, drawings, and architectural elements that reveal Meštrović’s vision of harmony between art and nature. Stone benches, arcades, and quiet corners encourage visitors to linger, making the site feel less like a museum and more like a retreat.

Meštrovićeve Crikvine – Kaštilac is located in Split, Croatia, on the Meje peninsula at the foot of Marjan hill, directly by the Adriatic Sea. The site is a fortified 16th-century complex that sculptor Ivan Meštrović restored in the 1930s as a retreat and chapel. Its name combines “Crikvine,” referring to the Church of the Holy Cross within the walls, and “Kaštilac,” meaning little fortress, which describes its stone towers and defensive walls overlooking a small cove. The location places you right on Split’s coastal walkway. Just steps away are the pebble beaches of Kašjuni and Ježinac, popular for swimming with views of the islands. Marjan Forest Park begins right behind Kaštilac, with pine-shaded paths leading to viewpoints like Vidilica and Telegrin. A short stroll east brings you to the Meštrović Gallery, the sculptor’s former villa and main gallery, set in gardens overlooking the sea. From there it’s an easy walk or short drive to Diocletian’s Palace in the historic center, with its Peristyle, Cathedral of St. Domnius, and Roman cellars. The Riva promenade and the Archaeological Museum are also nearby. With its seaside setting and sacred art, Kaštilac offers a quiet cultural stop between Marjan’s nature and Split’s ancient core.
