Marjan Forest Park is Split’s green sanctuary, a vast peninsula of pine forests, rocky cliffs, and winding trails rising above the city. Often called “the lungs of Split,” it has been protected since the early 20th century, making it one of Croatia’s oldest preserved urban parks. Its history stretches even further back: hermits and monks once lived in caves across the hillside, leaving chapels and carved niches that still survive. Visitors can explore scenic paths leading to panoramic viewpoints such as Telegrin, where the entire city, the islands, and the Adriatic unfold below. The park is dotted with small churches, including St. Nicholas and St. Jerome, each adding a quiet historical layer to the landscape. Beneath them lie ancient cave dwellings that reveal Marjan’s long spiritual tradition. The southern slopes offer dramatic sea views and access to beaches like Kašjuni, while the northern side is gentler, ideal for walking or cycling. The Mediterranean Botanical Garden, founded in 1951, showcases native flora and adds a scientific touch to the park’s natural beauty.

Its location on the western peninsula makes it easy to reach from the city centre, and it is especially popular with walkers, cyclists, and visitors looking for scenic viewpoints. Nearby, travellers can enjoy several interesting attractions. The old town of Split is close enough for a combined sightseeing trip, with Diocletian’s Palace, the Peristyle, and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius all within easy reach before or after a visit to Marjan. The Riva promenade is also nearby and offers a lively place to relax by the sea. Inside and around the park, visitors will find viewpoints, small chapels, quiet forest trails, and access to beaches such as Kašjuni. This makes Marjan a good choice for people who want both nature and city sightseeing in one day. Marjan Forest Park is especially attractive at sunset, when the views across Split and the surrounding islands are at their best.
