The Cathedral of Saint Domnius is one of Split’s defining landmarks and one of the oldest functioning cathedrals in the world. Originally built as Emperor Diocletian’s mausoleum in the early 4th century, it was later transformed into a Christian cathedral—an ironic twist, given Diocletian’s persecution of Christians. Its octagonal form and richly carved stonework preserve the elegance of late Roman architecture. Inside, the cathedral feels intimate yet monumental. The wooden doors, carved in the 13th century, depict scenes from Christ’s life with remarkable detail. The interior holds a blend of Roman, medieval, and Baroque elements, including the main altar dedicated to Saint Domnius, Split’s patron saint. The choir stalls and treasury showcase centuries of craftsmanship, with reliquaries, manuscripts, and liturgical objects. A highlight is the bell tower, rising slender and ornate above the old town. Climbing it rewards visitors with one of the best panoramic views of Split, from the palace rooftops to the Adriatic Sea.
