Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia in north-western Spain, is one of Europe’s most important historic and spiritual cities. Best known as the final destination of the Camino de Santiago, it has attracted pilgrims from across Europe for more than a thousand years. According to tradition, the remains of Saint James the Apostle were discovered here in the 9th century.
