Castelo da Rocha Forte is one of the most evocative historic sites in Santiago de Compostela, located on the outskirts of the city where the Sar and Sarela rivers meet. Built in the thirteenth century, the fortress served as a strategic stronghold for the archbishops of Santiago, controlling access to the city and asserting ecclesiastical power during a turbulent medieval period. Its history is marked by conflicts, including the Irmandiño Revolts, which led to its destruction in the fifteenth century. Today, the castle survives as an atmospheric archaeological site, with visible foundations, defensive walls and traces of towers that reveal its former scale. Surrounded by a peaceful natural landscape, Rocha Forte offers visitors a chance to explore an important chapter of Galicia’s past while enjoying a quiet, open‑air setting that contrasts with the busy historic centre of Santiago de Compostela.

The Castelo da Rocha Forte is located on Rúa do Piñeiro, s/n, near the Conxo area in Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, on the edge of the city about a 30–40 minute walk from the historic centre, just off the Camino Portugués route and close to the railway line and the Sar River. It sits in a quiet riverside area within the modern expansion of the city, near the healthcare complex and the main western exit road towards Padrón and Pontevedra, close to the confluence of the Río Sar and one of its small tributaries. Nearby, the path follows the Camino Portugués into the city, and the area is easily reached from the main bus stops and taxi ranks serving the university and hospital districts.
