Casa da Conga is one of the elegant architectural landmarks framing Praza da Quintana in Santiago de Compostela, adding harmony and balance to one of the city’s most emblematic squares. Built in the eighteenth century, the building reflects the refined neoclassical style promoted by the cathedral chapter, with a long, rhythmic façade marked by arches on the ground floor and evenly spaced balconies above. Its design was intended to complement the surrounding monumental ensemble, creating a unified urban space beside the cathedral. Over time, Casa da Conga has housed various institutions and commercial spaces, maintaining its role as an active part of the city’s daily life. Today, it remains a distinctive presence in the historic centre, appreciated for its architectural clarity and its contribution to the visual identity of Praza da Quintana, where history, civic life and the rhythm of the old town come together.
Santiago de Compostela Spain
The Casa da Conga is located on the southern side of Praza da Quintana, in the heart of Santiago de Compostela’s historic old town, forming part of the cathedral’s monumental complex, just a short walk from the Praza do Obradoiro and the main entrance to the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela. It stands on Praza da Quintana (Quintana de Mortos), facing the south side of the cathedral and the Puerta Santa, between the cathedral and the Monasterio de San Paio de Antealtares, in the UNESCO World Heritage centre where the Camino de Santiago routes converge. Nearby, the main pilgrimage squares — Praza do Obradoiro, Praza das Praterías, and Praza da Quintana — are steps away, along with the cathedral, the Pazo de Raxoi city hall, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos (Parador), and the Colexio de Fonseca (university rectorate). The surrounding area is Santiago’s main tourist and cultural hub, with shops, jewelers, cafés, Rúa Nova, Rúa do Franco’s tapas bars, the Mercado de Abastos food market, restaurants, hotels, and the historic buildings and museums of the compact old town all within easy walking distance.
